CHAPTER 20

Andy thought having dinner at Dom-Restoran Schast'ye off Abay Avenue to be an excellent recommendation by the concierge at the hotel with its generous portion sizes and the food was delicious. He felt the fifteen-minute walk back to the hotel would help his heavy meal settle in his stomach. He knew that tomorrow he had a reasonably early start since he'd amended his flight to Moscow. With his business class ticket booked on the 9:25am Aeroflot flight, he needed to be checked-in only two hours before departure.

The streets were quiet, and it didn't take long for Andy to spot two men tailing him. He noticed one of them make a brief cell phone call. His eye caught sight of two more men dressed in near identical clothes. They didn’t appear to be walking with any purpose on the other side of the road. Both wore dark green parkas, jeans and heavy-duty black rubber-soled boots. They were walking parallel to him and maintained their stride with his.

Andy picked up the pace.

The four men stayed with him.

He had another ten minutes to reach the hotel, and he wasn't certain whether the men were just there to shadow him or they'd make a move on him. Andy recalled there was a park just ahead. Andy turned at the sounds of rapidly approaching footsteps and saw the two men who'd been on the far side of the road, now running to join up with the two who'd been behind him. Seven against one. They were probably armed, which reduced his odds of coming out of this encounter unscathed.

"Mr Flint, I'm surprised to see you here after your car accident." Webb's upper-class English accent sounded condescending and grated on Andy. "I heard you went to hospital. The National Health Service is an amazing organization, particularly when treating injuries like those you received."

"You're well informed and the English Health Service treated me real fine. No complaints from me," Andy held both his hands upwards, spreading his arms wide and to the sides as if welcoming a dear friend. "Now, why don’t you tell me what you are doing here, Mr Webb?"

"Ah," Webb said, briefly rubbing his chin with his right hand before continuing. "I'm here to deliver a message, after which, I think you'll find the health services here to be sadly lacking compared to the good old NHS in England."

Before Andy could reply,
